Despite its well-known status as an Olympic game, handball or as it is usually known as team handball (to differentiate it with handball which is a different sport) remains unknown to most part of the world. Being played since the early 19th century, introduced in the Olympics in the 1936 Berlin game played on football turf, its popularity was overshadowed by more well known sports.
The first indoor version of handball was only introduced in the Olympics in 1972 Munich game. Women's handball game was launched in the later Olympics in 1976 in Montreal, Canada. Both men's and women's handball are now an established game and is emerging as one of the top in the Olympics.
