Pivot

Pivot is an offensive player who plays largely around the six-metre line. They are also known as 'line player'

Free Throw / Referee Throw

Free throw: A fresh start to offensive play without interference from the defence, awarded for a minor offence by the opponent.

Referee throw: Similar to a jump ball in basketball, a throw into the air by the referee so a player on each team can jump and try to gain control of the ball.

Court Player

Any playing player on the court except a goalkeeper (6 court player in a team + 1 goalkeeper). It is also known as a 'field player'.

Four Metre Line

Four metre line is a line four metres away in front of a goal that marks the limit of where a goalkeeper may advance to defend against a penalty throw. It is also known as 'goalkeeper's restraining line'.

Seven Metre Line / Penalty Throw

Seven-metre line also known as the penalty line is a one-metre line, seven metres away (perpendicular) in front of the goal where penalty throws are attempted.

Penalty throw also recognised as by seven-metre throw is a shot at goal defended only by the goalkeeper. Penalty throw are awarded for a serious infraction or because the defence illegally spoiled a clear chance to score a goal.

Six Metre Line / Goal Area

Six-metre line is an arcing line that defines the goal area, also known as the "goal area line". Goal area is the D-shaped area extending six metres from the goal and occupied only by the goalkeeper. Usually coded with different colour in contrast with the rest of the court so any players entering the goal area other than the goalkeeper can be clearly seen and penalised. Only the goal keeper are allowed to be inside the six-metre area.

The goal area in the above picture is in yellow as opposed to the rest of the court which is in blue. The nine metre line is the white dotted line in the picture.

Nine Metre Line

The nine metre line is another arcing dotted line extending nine metres from the goal, marking where an attacking team resumes play after being fouled inside the line. It is also called the "free-throw line".


So whenever an attacking player is fouled inside the 9 metre line i.e. between the 6 metre and 9 metre area, the free throw should be taken at the 9 metre line eventhough the player is being fouled inside the area.
