Shooters, Nokotta clinch handball titles

SHOOTERS and Nokotta emerged champions at the first Brunei National Handball Tournament at the Multi purpose hall, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex in Berakas yesterday.

Yesterday's matches rounded off the semi-final and final rounds for the event.

The group stage matches were held on July 16.

After easily defeating Mix KB 7-4 in the men's semi-finals, Shooters advanced to the final facing Swingerz who upset JBS in an earlier match.

Mohd Ashadi Besar gave Shooters an early 1-0 lead, but their opponents drew level just minutes later after a speedy rebound by Swingerz's Abd Rahim Ashim found the Shooters' defence unprepared.

But, Shooters showed they still had more gas to burn scoring three more goals to end the first half with a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Shooters increased their lead to 5-1 shortly after the break, only to see their opponents fighting back with greater tenacity, especially when Fakhri Zulkhairi DSS Hj Ibrahim capitalised twice, jumping high over the defenders to execute two blistering shots straight home.

In the end, the scores were sealed at 5-3 in Shooter's favour.

The women's final, meanwhile, pitted the Shooting Stars against Nokotta.

Masriatol Zuraifah Sajali had the honour to score Nokotta's first goal after a free throw from her teammate opened up a chance to slot the ball in.

Shooting Stars had numerous opportunities to score and definitely had pace, but were not able to convert their chances.

Desperate for an equaliser, the second half saw the Stars constantly on the offence, but it was Nokotta who scored again in the last two minutes, this time courtesy of Siti Shamsiah Sajali giving her team a 2-0 victory.
