Shooting Stars, Swingerz lead

THE preliminary group stage of the First Brunei Handball Open was a smashing success, as all the round-robin matches held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex went off without a hitch.

Held last Monday, the tournament is organised by the Brunei Handball Association's Pro Team in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang D-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 61st birthday anniversary.

Four men's teams and seven women's teams participated in the round robin matches which were held throughout the day, with Swingerz and Shooting Stars taking the lead at the top of the men's and women's category respectively.

After three wins in as many matches, Swingerz emerged the leader with nine points and having scored 17 times while letting in only three.

They were followed by Shooter, Department of Youth and Sport and Mix KB.

In the highly competitive women's category, Shooting Stars shot to the top with four wins, a draw and a loss to give them 13 points.

Having netted 24 goals and letting in only four, they will be wary of Nakotto who have scored only one goal less despite having played one game less

With three wins, two draws and a loss, Dragon Ballz clinched second spot with 11 points, while Nakotto and Black Pearls are joint third with 10 points each.

The knock-out rounds (semi-finals and final) will be contested on Sunday at the same venue, with the top side from both the men's and women's categories to be awarded the President's trophy.

The tournament is also aimed at promoting handball as a sport, scout for talented players to participate in future tournaments as well as encouraging a healthier lifestyle.
